Welcome Nicole!
Great to have you on board as part of the team. I'm sure our readers will be able to learn a lot from your experience in not only training and nutrition, but also the competition side of both Fitness and Figure.

Ladies, please feel free to ask Nicole any questions you may have about the above topics, or anything else you may like to know.

Chris

Hi Nicole,
It's really exciting having you on the Hers forum. I was wondering if your win at this year's Olympia has had any impact on the way you train or eat.

Hi fitness-diva!
Thank you! To answer your question, my main focus all year is to live life as balanced (nutrition, training, relationships, family, etc) as possible. Sure winning the Olympia gives me more motivation, but I also think that living a healthy lifestyle after so many years has become second nature. My training and nutrition is pretty consistent all year round because it makes me feel good inside and out. Although, at times I do enjoy taking an extra rest day or having some pizza in the offseason because I can Wink

Hi Nicole and welcome!! Congratulations on the big win at Olympia, how awesome that must be!! I read about your coming on board with Weider and MFHers, and am excited to learn/hear more about your experience(s) thus far.

Curiosity.......I hear of some women who really suffer the rebound effect post competition.....weight gain, depression etc. I was wondering how you handle yourself post competition especially after winning at the big O this year.....was it rather anticlimactic.....or has the win been able to keep you uplifted and motivated to (I would imagine so, lol!!)
Also, in your early career when you perhaps weren't placing as well as you would have liked, how did that effect you post competition at that time, if you wouldn't mind sharing those experiences?

Hello MuscleQueen!

Here are some training tips:
#1- Set a specific and realistic goal. Not just 'I want to lose weight', but something more specific like 'I want to lose 10lbs by Jan 1st.'

#2-Challenge yourself when lifting weights. If you can perform 15-20 reps with no problem, up the weight. The more muscle you have, the faster your metabolism will be and the more calories you will burn!

#3- Switch up your exercises. Do not do the same workout every time you get to the gym.

#4- Increase the intensity of your cardio. Try high intensity interval training (HIIT). It is very difficult and burns more calories in a shorter amount of time! No need to spend hours upon hours in the gym.

#5- Watch your diet! Proper nutrition is vital in order to reach your training goals.

#6- Rest and recovery are also key to a successful training program. Listen to your body and don't overtrain.

Best of luck!

Great question.
In the beginning of my career, I experienced a lot of ups and downs with my weight. I would go up as high as 20-25lbs in the offseason. Sometimes competiting can give you a skewed vision of what is 'normal'. I would look at myself and think that I was 'fat' and felt very uncomfortable because I knew how good it felt to be lean. My idea of 'fat' as most other competitors, would be what most women and men think is normal and in shape. It took me a while to find a comfortable offseason weight where I am still lean and can live a very 'balanced' life. I do think that competing is a great experience for everyone to get involved in. It teaches you a lot about yourself and your body. It is very challenging yet extremely rewarding. If I don't place as well as hoped, I just go back to the drawing board and train harder for the next show. I love to be challenged.
The win this year was a HUGE motivator for me. I have learned the best way to have a smooth transition to 'offseason' is to keep it clean the week after the show. Have a cheat meal the night of the show and even a little the day after, but starting Monday, get right back on the program and start implementing things slowly. Otherwise, your body will hold onto everything you gorge into and you will experience horrible rebound.
Hope this helps!

What does your cardio training look like when you are prepping for a show? Do you do HIIT or do you do longer , multiple cardio sessions a day ?

Once again CONGRATULATIONS on winning the Olympia!

Thank you!
When training for a show, I incorporate both types of cardio. Usually in the morning I do longer, moderate sessions and 3-4 times a week I'll incorporate HIIT.

It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is in less than 2 weeks! Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because I love spending time with family. This year we are going to my aunt's house in Novi, MI, about 45min from where we live. Before you know it, Christmas will be here!
This week I am working at our studio (Top Shape Fitness, Inc) training my clients everyday until I leave Thurs night for Nationals. I am working for my sponsor, Nutrigenix. This will be my first public appearance since winning the Olympia, so I am very excited to see everyone! If you are going to be there, stop by and say hi!
xoxo
